Whale Watching

Southern Right Whales were nearly hunted to extinction by the turn of the last century. Their numbers are now steadily increasing around 7% a year, and the coast around Cape Town offer some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. The season starts in late July and extends through until late October. A day tour takes you up the coast to the town of Hermanus to see these magnificent creatures from a famous cliff path along the seashore. There are plenty of other things to do in Hermanus (wine tasting, shops, golf, hiking, etc), but the whales are the real focus. There are also boat trips to see them should you wish to get even closer to these seafaring leviathans. If a full day travelling up the coast sounds too far, there are also boat trips leaving from Simonstown – only 45 mins from Cape Town.
